Abstract in Spanish: ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre vivir y existir? ¿Que es la realidad? La ontología es un tema complejo y no hay una respuesta definitiva a ninguna de estas preguntas. Aunque no hay una respuesta, la literatura nos da una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre lo que la realidad y la existencia significa para cada uno de nosotros. El objetivo de este proyecto es para aprender sobre la ontología por medio de los cuentos de Julio Cortázar. Para llevar a cabo este proyecto, analizaré sus cuentos, “Axolotl,” (1952) “Cartas para una señorita en París,” (1951) y “La noche boca arriba” (1956). Este proyecto analizará la vida de Julio Cortázar y que influyó sus cuentos e interés sobre la ontología. Por medio de sus cuentos, analizaré su percepción sobre la realidad y cómo sus personajes contemplan sus problemas ontológicos.
Abstract in English: What is the difference between living and existing? What is our reality? Ontology is a complicated subject and there is no definite answer to either of those questions. Although there is no answer, literature gives us the opportunity to reflect on what reality and existence means to each of us. The purpose of this capstone project is to learn about ontology through the short stories of Julio Cortázar. To carry out this project, I will be analyzing his short stories, “Axolotl,” (1952) “Cartas para una señorita en París,” (1951) and “La noche boca arriba” (1956). This project will analyze the life of Julio Cortázar and what influenced his interest in writing and interest about ontology. Through his use of realism and fantasy, I will analyze his perception on reality and how his characters contemplate their ontological problems.
