MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
Under this criteria, I have completed the courses: SPAN 395IP: Spanish Language and Culture (Fall 2016), SPAN 395IP: Writers from Granada (Fall 2016), SPAN 395IP: Introduction to Spanish Literature (Fall 2016) SPAN 395IP: Spanish and Latin American Contemporary Film (Spring 2017), and SPAN 395IP: Latin American Culture and Civilization (Spring 2017)
This was probably my favorite MLO to complete because I love learning about different cultures and this was an opportunity to learn about people who come from different backgrounds than myself. A beautiful way to learn about other cultures is through literature and embracing the culture.
One course I took to complete this MLO was Latin American Literature. I had never even heard of Julio Cortázar until I took a Latin American literature course and now he is one of my favorite authors. We read several texts by authors who influenced and really began movements where literature written in Spanish was becoming world-known. I was oblivious to the Movida Mardileña until I took a contemporary film course. While I was studying abroad in Granada, Spain, I took courses that taught me about the culture and history of Spain. In this course, we learned through class discussions, readings and field trips. Because I lived in Southern Spain, we talked a lot about the Islamic culture that is still mixed with the Spanish culture. We got to learn about the gypsies of Spain by going to their neighborhood and attending a city festival dedicated to the marginalized people of Spain, the gypsies. Through this MLO, I have learned so much about what has happened in history and how people take those lessons and grow.
The hardest part about this MLO for me was on the literature aspect. Some of the texts, especially in my Introduction to Spanish Literature course (where most of the texts were written during the 14th century) were much more difficult to comprehend. I had to ask a lot of questions and take many notes to better understand the material, but now I have a broader knowledge of Spanish language literature and how it differs around the world. The cultural understanding was not as difficult to complete because I had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain. Even while I was there, we talked about other Spanish speaking countries and how their cultures were influenced or differed from the Spanish culture.
In my opinion, this is one of the MLOs that really gives us a better world perspective. I learn a lot through literature and surrounding myself in cultures. I know that through this MLO, I have a better understanding of the world and how our stories and culture get put onto paper.
To demonstrate my understanding and knowledge of literary and cultural knowledge, I have attached a final reflection paper that I wrote for my Spanish Culture and Civilization Course. This assignment is a short explanation of everything I learned in that class through the semester.
