In this course, I had the opportunity to learn more about the Spanish culture while I was living in Spain. One of the main ways that I learned about their culture was through living in the country, but this course helped me understand how many of those traditions came to be and the ways that the locals celebrate their culture. Every class was a different discussion about a different aspect of the culture. We talked about food, traditions, holidays, music, education, the language and the gypsies of Spain. Before arriving to Spain, I had a very basic understanding of their culture. I knew that they ate paella, they danced flamenco and that they liked to take siestas. Yes, all of those things are true, but because of this class I learned how they came to be. For example, flamenco actually began from the marginalized group of gypsies as they were traveling on pilgrimage from Eastern Europe to the West. They found a way to express themselves and soon enough it became extremely popular. Below I attached and assignment that I submitted which talks more in depth about flamenco and how it came to be. This class didn't really necessarily have many challenges for me. It was really just a time for me to learn more in depth about the place I was living in and how all of those things create the culture. This class gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of the Spanish culture.
