MLO 1 Language Proficiency
Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines.
Under this criteria, I have completed the course SPAN 395IP: Speaking and Writing Skills 1 (Fall 2016), SPAN 395IP: Introduction to Hispanic Literature (Fall 2016), and WLC 400 (Pending Spring 2018).
Through the classes I mentioned previously, which I took while studying abroad at the University of Granada, Spain, I was able to improve on my language proficiency. These courses allowed me to develop that proficiency through interpersonal, interpretive and presentational settings. In the classes that I took, my peers and I would work on individual and group projects surrounding literature, writing and reading new content. All of the courses that I took required me to have a high understanding of Spanish language and literature. I was able to develop presentation skills by speaking in front of the rest of the class and my professor. Through different types of literature, my vocabulary developed further and I am now able to understand more difficult texts. I now know how to analyze information more critically and express myself more fluidly. Through some of these courses, I was able to learn more about the Spanish speaking world through different colloquialisms around the world and the complexity of the language around the globe.
This MLO had its challenges. For myself, the most challenging part was competency of different texts. Before these courses, I hadn’t had much exposure to difficult texts in Spanish. In high school, we would read short stories or small books, but none of it was ever too difficult for me to comprehend. With these courses, I was struggling more and had to re-read content to understand it better. Now I feel more confident when reading things and I don’t struggle as often to understand the content.
While I studied abroad, I hadn’t realized how much I was going to be working on this MLO in my daily life. Going and learning the different colloquialisms and speaking it for the majority of my stay are what really helped me develop the language proficiency. I spoke Spanish to my parents, but when I didn’t know a word, I could refer to the word in English and my parents would understand. Now, when I speak to my parents, I rarely have trouble and I can talk about more complex subjects. This MLO is one that is involved so greatly in learning a new language and through my courses and experience living abroad, I have learned how important language proficiency truly is.
I have attached an assignment that I completed for my Hispanic Cultures and Civilizations course as evidence of completion of the MLO. For this assignment, I had to read an article, summarize and analyze what was discussed and then share it with my class. This is a great example of interpersonal, interpretive and presentational skills in the Spanish language.
