SSC 106 Latin American Culture and Civilization (3) [Civilización y cultura hispanoamericanas] Twentieth century Latin America: geography, history, politics, society, and culture.
In this class, I had the opportunity to learn more about Latin American culture and civilization. In this class, we began by talking about ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, Incas and Mayas. We talked about their rituals, geographic location, and interactions with the Spaniards. From there, we talked about how their culture changed and developed when it became mixed with people from other countries. It was interesting to see how the cultures blended and created what we know today. For example, in México, women celebrate their quinceañeras because of a tradition from Aztec culture and a mix of catholicism. When women would turn 15 in the Aztec civilization, that meant that they were ready to have children or become a sacrifice for the gods. In this class, we also talked about the civilizations throughout Latin America and how they were affected by many things such as their history, economy and politics. In many places in Latin America, they have come out of or are currently in dictatorships which can cause more hardships for their citizens. In some countries, like Venezuela, there are not enough resources for their citizens which means that there is constant upheaval and riots.
I found this class to be very interesting because I was able to learn about how my culture came to be and why we celebrate the things we do. I hadn’t known their origins or why we celebrated certain things like Día de los Muertos. It was also an opportunity for me to learn more about why those countries are currently struggling and how they are dealing with those difficulties.
Below, I have attached a sample work where I wrote about a current event about how Chileans deal with so many earthquakes.
